A few words from our SSCO, Mr Pugh.....
SSCo
As the School Sport Coordinator for Holsworthy Community College and the surrounding area primary schools, my role is centred on increasing opportunities and raising standards in PE and school sport for the nine primary schools within the cluster (Ashwater, Black Torrington, Bradford, Bradworthy, Bridgerule, Clawton, Halwill, Holsworthy & St Giles-on-the-Heath Primary School). This is primarily done by working with the schools and the School Games Organiser (SGO) to develop and implement a programme of festivals and competitions across the family of schools, be that in competitive format or friendly festivals focusing on increasing participation, varying from cross country to tag rugby events.
I am required to work closely with primary school PLTs in order to support them and their colleagues in delivering PE and sport in their school. This has been achieved by providing a programme of CPD training sessions throughout the school year, with sessions in a variety of sports being delivered by myself as well as specialists in alternative activities also. These sessions have provided schools and staff with a bank of useful resources that can be used by all of the cluster schools in order to assist them with their PE lessons.
My role as School Sport Co-Ordinator also sees me organise and deliver a sports programme specifically for Gifted and Talented pupils from the local primary schools. By running a ‘Born to Win’ event, testing pupils in a range of sporting activities, I am able to select a group of gifted and talented athletes who are able to attend the college during the school year for gifted and talented sessions where they will develop key skills such as agility, as well as enhance their theoretical knowledge of sport and Physical Education. As part of this programme they are also invited to the University of Bath in the summer term, to experience what university life is like from a sporting point of view.
As well as sporting festivals which have been hosted by the College, myself and a number of sports leaders from the college have also been out and visited primary schools in order to deliver PE lessons. I have begun to establish and develop sustainable links with local sports clubs such as Holsworthy Golf Club, with them agreeing to visit the primary schools and deliver some golf lessons as well as inviting the primary schools to the golf club for sessions.
The role has also allowed me to continue to provide opportunities for the secondary school pupils to act as sports leaders and develop their skills in this role. Something which many of them have really embraced, and as a result it has appeared to have had a really positive impact on their confidence and leadership skills, not only in sport but in everyday life.
